Choosing a hosting provider can be complicated. Therefore, after years of dealing with bad hosts and after years of being with good hosts, I have written my SiteGround Hosting Review. I hope that it will help you to choose a web host that meets your needs.
So how do you chose the right web hosting provider? With all the options that are out there, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. This can result in choosing a host based on hype or the lowest price. As a result, this can lead to regret down the road. Therefore, I have written my SiteGround Hosting Review.
- Up Time – 99%
- Speed – Very Fast!
- Support – Great Customer Service
- Features – All that you need
- Site Migration – Free!
- Renewal Rates
- Free Domain Not Included
- Limits on “StartUp” Plan
The first hosting provider that I ever had was was chosen based solely on price. I now know that this was a big mistake. This is because I experienced problems with load times, up times, and customer support soon after signing up with them. The service and support was good for a month or two but things changed quickly. Does this sound familiar?
SiteGround Hosting Review
Read my SiteGround Hosting Review before you chose your hosting provider. It will give you an idea of the things to look for when selecting a hosting provider.
1 – Up Time
There’s one thing that every website owner dreads, and that is having your website be offline. This is because every minute counts when you have an E-commerce site (time is money). But the same thing is true for any type of site you may have. It doesn’t matter if it’s a marketing site, a blog or a small hobby site. If you are paying for hosting, you expect the site to be available at all times.
I recently checked the last 24 hours of up time for SiteGround on uptime.com and they scored 100%. This was not a big surprise to me as I have not noticed a single problem with up time in all the years that I have been with them. Did I mention that WPbasics is now hosted by SiteGround? So as far as up time goes, this website has not experienced any problems the whole time that I have been with SiteGround. Therefore, SiteGround gets 5 Stars for up time.
2 – Speed
The speed at which a page loads has always been important to me. In fact, that is one of the main reasons that I changed my hosting provider. I tested WPbasics on uptime.com a few times and my website speed now averages at 772 ms. This is considerably faster than my prior host where it was taking 5 seconds or longer to load my site.
Do your research prior to signing up with a hosting provider. This is because the importance of a fast site can not be over stated. As a matter of fact, Google now uses the speed of your site as a ranking factor. Read my article on Indexing for a little more information.
SiteGround recognizes the importance of a fast site. Therefore they provide a free optimization plugin. This plugin lets you do the following with just one click;
- Add Cache
- Lazy Load Images
- Optimize Images
- Install SSL Certificate
- Enable HTTPS
3 – Support -24/7 Live Chat
If you own or manage a website you will at some point come across a situation that you can’t handle on your own. Therefore, the quality of the customer support that your host provides is critical.
There are two types of customer support that I have come across.
- Support staff that assist using a script
- Support staff that assist because they actually know what they are talking about
Some hosting providers use scripts to provide customer support. Sorting out technical issues with this type of support can be very frustrating. This is because some scripted answers are not on point to the question that you asked. As a result you can be left with the feeling that you are being blamed for the problem. Often times their answer is to try to up sell you on a product. This approach can be extremely frustrating. I should also add that getting hold of some companies customer support is not very easy.
SiteGround Support – Knowledgeable
SiteGround regularly sends their staff for training. Their staff actually know what they’re talking about. As a result, every interaction that I have had with their customer support staff has been positive. My support requests have always been resolved quickly and professionally. I have never been made to feel as if I caused the problem. Even if I did. The focus of SiteGround staff has always been, “how can I help?”. Therefore, SiteGround gets 5 Stars for their knowledgeable staff.
SiteGround Support – 24/7 Live Chat
When I need customer support at SiteGround, I use the 24/7 Live Chat feature. I’m usually connected with a customer support representative within a minute or two. Live Chat is my preferred way of getting customer support. However, you also have the option of opening a ticket. Once again, the response time is very fast. Look for good customer support when choosing your web host. As a result, I give SiteGround 5 Stars for their 24/7 Live Chat.
4 – Features
SiteGround has three plans to chose from, StartUp, GrowBig, and GoGeek. The StartUp plan is a good choice if your are just starting out and have only one website. It’s only $3.95 per month and includes the “Essential Features” you will need when just starting out. You get the following;
- 10,000 Monthly visits
- 10 GB Web Space
- Free Email
- 30 Day Money Back
- Unlimited Sub or Parked Domains
- Unmetered Data Transfer
- Free CMS Install
- Unlimited MySQL DB
The GrowBig plan is a great value for the money you pay. In addition to the “Essential Features” you get Unlimited domains, the SuperCacher, that greatly improves a WordPress of Joomla website speed. You also get staging sites and GIT integration with this plan.
The GoGeek plan is perfect for people with e-commerce and larger sites. In addition you also get staging sites and GIT integration. Due to fact that SiteGround provides so many features, they get 5 Stars for Features.
5 – Site Migration
Some people are hesitant to switch hosts because the migration of a website from one host to another can seem daunting. When I moved my site to SiteGround from another host, I let SiteGround take care of the move. I did this so I could see how well they handled the move. Let me tell you, the move went really smooth. The SiteGround staff took care of everything. Therefore, SiteGround gets 5 Stars for Site Migration.
GrowBig and higher plans at SiteGround come with one free professional website transfer, while StartUp plans can pay an additional fee for the service. You also have the option of doing the transfer yourself. It’s really easy if you use the plugin All In One WP Migration and follow this tutorial.
I actually had to struggle to find negative things to say about this company in my SiteGround Hosting Review. But in the interest of presenting a fair review, I did find a couple of things.
1 – Renewal Rates
The renewal rates for all the plans are considerably higher that the introductory price. This is why I recommend that you sign up for the 3 year period if possible. That way you lock in the special price for 3 years and get maximum savings.
I should add though that SiteGround is still great value for what you get even after the introductory price is finished. Remember not to pick your host based solely on the lowest price. Instead look for the best value for your money. In my opinion, SiteGround provides the best value for your money. Therefore, SiteGround gets 4 Stars for Renewal Rates.
2 – Free Domain Not Included
A lot of hosting providers offer a free domain for 1 year when you sign up with them. SiteGround does not offer a free domain name on any of their plans. This can a deal breaker for some. As a result, SiteGround gets 4 Stars for not offering a Free Domain.
But before you let this be a deal breaker, consider this. Most hosting providers charge an inflated amount for the domain name after the first year. Another thing to consider is that you can get a domain name at a very low price from a provider such as NameCheap. Use my NameCheap Coupon and receive a 19% discount on your domain name.
Do your research and look for value in hosting and not just price.
3 – Limits on “StartUp” Plan
The StartUp plan is only $3.95 per month but it does have some limits with what you get. On the StartUp plan you get the following;
- 1 Website
- 10 GB Web Space
- ~ 10,000 Visits Monthly
- No Staging Site
This plan is geared toward people that have smaller websites with moderate traffic. If this is you, it will meet your needs. You can upgrade as your site gets bigger. I recommend the GrowBig plan. It’s what I have and it meets all my needs. However, due to the limits put on the StartUp plan, I have to give SiteGround 4 Stars for this.
SiteGround is one of the most popular hosting providers in the WordPress community for a reason. The speed and service they provide are among the best in hosting providers. SiteGround is an excellent choice if you are starting a new WordPress site or if you are looking for a change. I only recommend products and services that I use or truly believe in. My first hand experience with SiteGround has been great and I give them a rating of 4.66 out of 5 Stars.
