The Genesis Framework
If you use WordPress, you have probably heard of the Genesis framework. You have probably heard about how great it is, and that you should be using it. But why (specifically) should you use the Genesis framework.
I personally use the Genesis framework on every site that I build and I love it. Therefore, here are my top reasons for doing so.
With a “regular” WordPress site, I have found that each theme has a learning curve, some greater than others. This is because different developers built sites differently. Some are better coded than others. But you still have to learn the theme each time.
The Genesis framework simplifies this, because it is the basis for all its’ child themes. Therefore Genesis always works the same. This means that once you know the Genesis framework, you know it. No need to learn the framework each time you want to make a similar customization.
Let’s suppose you want to add an area for advertising before your content area. You could simply google “add before content area, Genesis”. You might find a video tutorial such as this one from my YouTube channel. The beauty of this is that once you’ve learned it, you’ve learned it and can use the exact tutorial on any other Genesis child theme. No need to learn how to do it for each new theme.
2 Great support
The Genesis framework was developed by StudioPress and they are great at providing support. The Genesis framework also has a huge community of helpful developers. If you run into any problems or have any questions, you have a number of options available to you.
- Open a support ticket at the StudioPress website.
- Ask a question at the StudioPress forum.
- Ask a question on the Genesis Facebook group. This is my favorite option.
- Search for a tutorial. There are a bunch of websites and YouTube channels that provide awesome free tutorials.
3 Well coded
The Genesis framework was developed by StudioPress and is regularity updated to be compatible with the latest version of WordPress. The Genesis framework reflects the best practices for coding. If a bug is ever found, StudioPress is quick to identify and release an update.
The Genesis framework is coded to be lean and without unnecessary bloat. This make the framework fast and a pleasure to work with.
4 Easy updates
The Genesis framework is the skeleton of a website. The child themes add design or beauty and the plugins add functionality. This separation ensures that an update to the framework will not result in a loss to the customization’s you have made to your website. The way your website looks will not change when there is an update to the Genesis framework.
When an update to the Genesis framework is released, the process of updating is super easy. You will receive an update notification, all you have to do is accept the update. Once accepted the download begins. That’s it, that’s all there is to it.
Once you’ve purchased the Genesis framework you are good to go, straight out of the box. However, Genesis is not limited to how the demo of the child theme looks. Far from it! The only limitation is your imagination. I like Genesis because it grows with you. If you are new to web development and don’t want to mess around to much with the child theme, that’s fine. The beauty of Genesis is that as your knowledge grows, Genesis can grow with you. With Genesis, you can do as much or as little customization as you like. You can easily add new content sections, move sections around, delete sections, change fonts, change colors, and the list goes on and on.
Are you thinking to yourself, “I don’t know any coding, how can I do any of this?”. No problem! The Genesis community is extremely helpful and generous with giving out free code snippets. Need to add new sections or functionality to your site, just perform a Google search. In most cases you will find a tutorial.
6 Great value for the price
The Genesis framework and a child theme of your choice costs only $99.95. This also includes the Genesis sample theme.
You can also buy the framework alone. The cost for this is around $59.00 and it includes the sample child theme. You can use this as the basis for custom theme development You only have to buy the framework once. Once you have the framework, themes will run you around $40.00 and can be used on unlimited sites.
Another option is to purchase the Pro Plus All-Theme Package. The pro-pack gives you access to all the child themes StudioPress has and to a number of third party themes for a one time fee of $499.95. This also includes support for one year. Optional support can be purchased after the first year.
One thing that I really appreciate is that you can use the Genesis framework and your child theme on as many websites as you like. No limits.
The Genesis framework has improved my site development greatly. Genesis is for anyone who wants to dive in and develop great websites. You can be a seasoned developer, a designer or just working on your own personal site as a hobby. These are just six of the many reasons why you should be using the Genesis Framework.
